First big apologies for not updating the blog earlier. I have been quite busy since summer due to new family member 🙂

Since last post I have bought a new boat. Previous bout was OK but not good enough for rough seas. Also this new boat has more space and it has bigger engine.

Boat has 115 HP Mercury 4-stroke engine and I have also installed Minn Kota Riptide 55 lbs bow mounted electric motor on it. Minn Kota has iPilot functionality which is awesome.

During the first trips we had a chance to try catching some sea trouts. I haven’t been chasing sea trouts very much earlier but now I will spend some time catching them in the future. My friend managed to catch one nice trout.

As soon weather warms up and the ice is gone new season is open. Hopefully this will happen in April.

I woke up on last saturday morning with a thought of a new fly rod for this summer. My current fly rod for trout and salmon is quite old and I decided to grab a new one. So I called almost immediately to local Vision gear retailer and after discussion I had new Vision Cult 9′ 6″ / #8 line rod waiting in the shop. Goal was to get a fly rod which would be perfect for salmon dry fly fishing and also for trout fishing with streamers. The rod is a 4-piece medium action which is best for my casting style.

Rod finishing is great. It has dark brownish color and it has Pacific Bay guide rings. Overall feeling is that the rod has very impressive quality.

The handle is Full Wells type and the cork quality is good. Very smooth feeling. Reel seat is anodized aluminium.

Rod comes in a cordura tube.

So far I have been fishing with the rod twice and I have to say I love it! Casting is very easy and the action fits to my casting style perfectly. All my previous rods have been medium or medium-fast actions so I had no problems casting with this rod. The rod will get some good action with salmons (I Hope!) during this summer and after that we will see how it will perform.

Last summer my friend recommended new fishing technique when we were fishing one very nice fishing spot in Southern Finland. Typically best way to catch some fish there is to use nymphs and pupas. The best fishing time is during night time and I have always had some difficulties to track the fishing line or leader to see the fish strike. During night time it has been nearly impossible for me because of my poor night vision. My friend recommended using Thingamabobber as a strike indicator. So I did try them and I managed to get some few nice trouts 🙂

Thingamabobbers are small round plastic “balloons” which float very well and they seem to be very durable. They are attached to the fly leader by putting a small loop through the eye and placing it over the ball.

There are several colors available and I found yellow or light pink was the best color during night time fishing. It was pretty easy to cast as well. I had 10 ft / #7 line weight fly rod and I did not have any problems casting.

I found a review from Montana Test.com in case you might be interested.
